Home & Garden Bar Lighting Ideas: Neon, Festoon & Strip

Garden Inspiration
Published: 2nd Sep 2026

Written by: Stephen Alty

To light a home or garden bar, layer a few accent sources: a statement neon sign, an overhead festoon canopy, a hidden strip along the back-bar shelves, and a soft under-counter glow. Keep it warm white as the base with one colour accent for personality, and you have the look of a proper bar. The decorative layer is what gives a bar its atmosphere, so that is where this guide focuses.

Below are the best lights for a bar, ideas by zone, and how to do it outdoors for a garden bar or pub shed.

The bar lighting layers

A good bar is lit in layers, not by one bright light. The decorative layer that sets the mood has four parts:

  • A statement sign as the focal point, usually a neon word above or behind the bar.
  • An overhead canopy of festoon or string light over the bar and seating.
  • Back-bar shelf light hidden along the bottle shelves.
  • Under-counter glow that makes the bar appear to float.

Overhead task lighting to see what you are pouring, and general room lighting, sit outside this decorative layer. This guide covers the accent look, the part that makes a bar feel like a bar.

Best lights for a bar

  • Neon flex bar sign. The statement piece. Bend it into a word or your bar’s name for a premium, glowing focal point.
  • Festoon canopy. Warm bulbs strung overhead for that classic beer-garden glow. See festoon lights.
  • LED strip. Hidden along shelves and under the counter for shelf and floating-bar glow. Browse LED strip light.
  • Rope light. A continuous line for outlining the bar frame or a canopy edge. See the rope light range.
  • String lights or bunting. An easy, informal layer for a garden bar or pub shed.

Home bar lighting ideas by zone

The bar sign. Make this your focal point. A neon word like “Bar”, “Cheers” or your bar’s name, mounted above or behind the counter, does more for the atmosphere than anything else in the room.

Back-bar shelves and bottle display. Back-bar lighting is a strip hidden along the front underside of the bottle shelves. It lights the bottles from above and makes the glass and labels glow, which is the single most effective bar-lighting trick.

Under-counter and kick. Tuck an LED strip under the bar lip and along the kick at the base. The counter appears to float, and the glow spills softly onto the floor.

An overhead canopy. String festoon or fairy lights above the bar and seating for a warm ceiling of light that pulls the whole space together, indoors or out.

The seating side. Wrap a strand of warm lights around a pergola, parasol or nearby wall so the drinking side is as cosy as the bar itself.

A feature wall. Outline a shelf unit, mirror or a chalkboard menu with rope light or a strip to frame the back of the bar.

Garden bar and pub shed lighting

A garden bar needs everything a home bar does, built to shrug off the weather. Choose an outdoor-rated festoon for the canopy and an IP-rated neon sign so the statement piece survives outside. Outline the bar frame or roofline with rope light, keep every outdoor connection in a weatherproof enclosure, and run the lot from a single plug with a connectable system where you can, so one socket powers the whole setup.

This is where a connectable festoon canopy earns its keep: one plug, a long warm run over the bar and seating, and no trailing leads across the lawn. Pair it with a neon sign on the shed wall and you have a proper local at the bottom of the garden.

“Particularly popular in commercial settings, cut-to-length neon flex is a favourite with our business customers, who value the customisation of the product along with the eye-catching glow that radiates from the high-performance LEDs.”

Richard Butterfield, Operations Manager, Festive Lights

Colour and atmosphere

Warm white is the base. Warm white light sits around 2200 to 2700K and looks golden and relaxing, which suits a bar far better than a cold, clinical white. Build the whole scheme on it, then add one colour accent for personality, such as a coloured neon word or a colour-change strip behind the shelves. One accent reads as stylish; five reads as a fairground.

Aim for a dimmable feel, from happy-hour bright to late-night low. Lights on a dimmer or a couple of switched layers let you take the room from lively to intimate as the evening goes on, which is exactly how a real bar controls its mood.

Make your own bar sign

A neon sign is the centrepiece, and you can make your own for far less than a bespoke order. Cut-to-length neon flex bends sideways into a word, a name or a shape, so you sketch your design, bend the flex along it, and mount it on a backboard. Our guide to making a DIY neon sign walks through it step by step, and for more ways to use strip, rope and neon around the bar, see our LED strip light ideas.

Practical and safe

Bars mean splashes and, outdoors, weather, so check the IP rating for anything behind the counter or outside. The IP rating tells you how well a light resists dust and water; use a splash-rated fitting behind the bar and IP65 outdoors. Keep LED strip cool-running and tidy, tucked neatly under the shelf or counter lip rather than loose. And plan your power before you build: work out where your sockets are, or run a connectable set from one plug so you are not chaining extension leads behind the bar.

FAQ

What are the best lights for a home bar?

A neon sign as the statement, a festoon canopy overhead, and a hidden LED strip along the back-bar shelves and under the counter. Layer these in warm white for a proper bar feel.

How do I light a garden bar or pub shed?

Use an outdoor-rated festoon for the canopy and an IP-rated neon sign, outline the frame with rope light, weatherproof every connection, and run it from a single plug with a connectable system where possible.

What lights work for back-bar shelves?

A hidden LED strip along the front underside of each shelf. It lights the bottles from above and makes the glass and labels glow, the classic back-bar look.

Can I make a custom bar sign myself?

Yes. Cut-to-length neon flex bends into a word or your bar’s name, so you can make a custom sign at home for a fraction of the cost of a bespoke order.

Are LED bar lights safe near bottles and behind a bar?

Yes. LED lights run cool, so they are safe near bottles and glassware. Behind a bar where splashes happen, or outdoors, choose a fitting with the right IP rating.

Call last orders on a dull bar

The best bar lighting is a few warm, well-placed layers: a neon sign to set the tone, a festoon canopy overhead, and a hidden strip to make the shelves and counter glow. Build it in warm white, add one colour accent, and you have a bar that looks the part from first pour to last orders.

Ready to fit out yours? Start with the LED neon flex for your sign and build the layers from there.
