How to Make a DIY Neon Sign (+ LED Neon Sign Ideas)

DIY & Fun Stuff
Published: 28th Jul 2026

Written by: Nick Lyford

An LED neon sign is a word or shape made from flexible LED neon flex: a soft silicone tube of closely spaced LEDs that glows as one solid line, with no visible dots. To make one yourself, you sketch your design at full size, bend the neon flex along the outline, and mount it on a backing board. The result gives you the look of real glass neon, but cooler, safer, cheaper and far more durable.

This guide walks you through the build step by step, shares design ideas, and explains why neon flex beats glass neon and EL wire at home.

What you need to make a DIY neon sign

  • LED neon flex in your chosen colour and length. Ours runs 120 LEDs per metre, is IP65-rated, and carries a 24-month warranty. Measure your design first, then order that exact length.
  • A backing board. Clear acrylic for a floating, invisible-mount look, or painted plywood for a solid backboard. Source this separately to suit your design.
  • Fixings. Mounting clips, screws or cable ties to hold the flex to the board.
  • An end cap and sealant to close and waterproof the cut end.
  • The correct power cord for your neon flex, plus a transformer if required.
How to Make a DIY Neon Sign

How to make a DIY neon sign in 5 steps

  1. Sketch your design at full size. Draw the word or shape at the actual dimensions you want, keeping it to a single continuous line where you can. This is your bending template.
  2. Measure the total run. Follow every curve of your sketch with a tape or a piece of string to find the exact length of neon flex you need. Add a little slack rather than cutting it fine.
  3. Order that length of neon flex. Cut-to-length means you buy the precise metreage. Because it is custom-cut, it is non-returnable, so measure twice and order once.
  4. Side-bend and mount it. Neon flex bends sideways, so shape it along your sketched outline and fix it to the backing board with clips or ties as you go. Only cut at the marked cut points on the casing.
  5. Seal the end and power up. Fit the end cap and sealant to the cut end, connect the power cord, and switch on. Keep to simple, continuous-run designs for the cleanest result.

For designs with gaps or crossing strokes, plan a discreet join or a blackout section rather than forcing an awkward bend. Complex multi-stroke artwork is where a simple home build reaches its limit.

LED neon sign ideas

  • Words and quotes. A name, a greeting, a favourite phrase or a wedding hashtag.
  • Shapes and symbols. A heart, a lightning bolt, a cocktail glass or a simple logo.
  • Home bar or gaming wall. A bold neon line reads as genuinely premium behind a bar or above a setup.
  • Bedroom. A soft warm-white word or shape makes a cosy, modern feature above a bed or desk.
  • Wedding and party backdrops. A neon centrepiece paired with curtain lights behind it makes a backdrop every guest will photograph.
  • Business and shopfront. An eye-catching sign for a window, café or market stall. For commercial signage at scale, a business account gets you trade pricing.
LED Neon Sign Ideas

Neon flex vs glass neon vs EL wire

LED Neon Flex

  • Look: Solid, even glow
  • Safety: Cool to touch, shatterproof
  • Durability: High, IP65 available
  • Cost: Affordable
  • Best for: DIY signs, real-neon look

Glass Neon

  • Look: Solid, even glow
  • Safety: Hot, fragile glass
  • Durability: Low, breakable
  • Cost: Expensive
  • Best for: Bespoke commercial

EL Wire

  • Look: Thin, dim line
  • Safety: Cool but delicate
  • Durability: Low, short life
  • Cost: Cheap but looks cheap
  • Best for: Budget craft projects

Neon flex sits in the sweet spot: the premium look of glass neon without the cost, heat or fragility, and far classier than EL wire. See how it compares with the rest of the rope and neon range.

“Particularly popular in commercial settings, cut-to-length neon flex is a favourite with our business customers, who value the customisation of the product along with the eye-catching glow that radiates from the high-performance LEDs.”

Richard Butterfield, Operations Manager, Festive Lights

Safety and where to hang your neon sign

LED neon signs are cool to touch and safe around children, pets and soft furnishings. For indoor signs, any neon flex is fine. For a bathroom, garden or exposed spot, use IP65-rated flex, which resists dust and water. Our guide to IP ratings explains exactly what each figure allows.

Always use the correct power supply for your neon flex. For a permanent, hardwired commercial installation, have it fitted by a qualified electrician. And remember: cut-to-length is non-returnable, so measure twice before you order.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a neon sign at home?

Sketch your design full size, measure the total length, order that length of LED neon flex, then side-bend it along your outline, mount it on a backing board, seal the end and plug it in. Simple continuous-line words and shapes work best.

What do I need to make a DIY neon sign?

LED neon flex in your chosen colour and length, a backing board (clear acrylic or painted plywood), mounting clips or cable ties, an end cap and sealant, and the correct power cord.

Is LED neon flex better than glass neon or EL wire?

For a home sign, yes. Neon flex gives the solid, real-neon glow of glass without the heat, cost or fragility, and it looks far more premium than thin, dim EL wire. It is cool to touch and available IP65-rated for outdoor use.

Are LED neon signs safe and cool to touch? Can they go outside or in a bathroom?

Yes, LED neon signs stay cool to touch and are safe around children and pets. For a bathroom, garden or other damp or outdoor spot, choose IP65-rated neon flex.

What colour and length of neon flex should I choose?

Pick the colour that suits the room: warm white for a cosy, classic look, or a bold colour for a statement. For length, measure your full design including every curve, then order that exact metreage.

Ready to make yours?

A DIY neon sign is one of the most satisfying lighting projects you can make, and with quality neon flex you get the real-neon look for a fraction of the cost. Sketch it, measure it, bend it, mount it, and make something worth switching on.
