The story of how the wreath became such a significant element of Christmas decor is steeped in, mainly religious, history. Originally, it is thought they were used by the Romans to signify victory, although the most common reason for their existence is that the wreath, using evergreen foliage in a circular shape to represent eternal life, was used to symbolise the arrival of the 'Light of the World', or Jesus Christ. The tradition of placing a wreath on the door is very much still part of our Yuletide decorative practices, and the designs, largely, remain based on the original foliage, although mostly artificial for ease of use and practicality. Along with placing wreaths on doors, many people choose to use them to decorate their table centrepieces, usually teamed with candles.
