How To: DIY Neon Sign 💛

If you follow our blogs and our YouTube channel, you’ll know that a few weeks ago we made our very own cactus neon sign using our cut to length Neon Flex. (If you missed it, you can find it here). The first DIY got such a positive response that we thought we’d have another go; this time making something a bit different and a featuring a stunning, on-trend copper wire frame!  Keep watching and find out how you can make your own:

We created this stunning heart sign using a mix of 1 metre warm white and 2 metre ice white Neon Flex LED cut-to-length rope lighting, and a 2 metre power cable. The neon flex is malleable, allowing you to sculpt it however you like and making hundreds of shapes possible. The classic neon glow, which can easily be mistaken for the real thing, is created with energy efficient LEDs within the flex. This means light will always stay cool to the touch and, since it is not traditional glass neon, it won’t smash so you do not have to worry about any safety hazards!

You will need:

  1. Cable ties
  2. Scissors
  3. Neon flex
  4. Metal mesh grid

Step-By-Step:

  1. Map out the Neon Flex to start, so you know roughly where the design will finish. (You don’t want extra hanging off the edge!)
  2. Start cable tying in place, but don’t tighten yet. You may have to keep bending and shaping to reach the desired shape.
  3. Gently heat the Neon Flex with a hairdryer/heater to make it more flexible, if you need to.
  4. Tighten up the cable ties and snip the excess, once you are happy with the placement. (Tip: we also turned the cable ties around to make the design neater from the front).
  5. Decorate the grid or keep it simple, it’s totally up to you! We have seen many people on Pinterest adding dried roses and artificial floristry, which looks super cute!
  6. Finally hang your masterpiece up for all to see!
