So, in the spirit of Christmas, we wanted to gift you this Get the Look guide, helping you transform your home into the warmest, jolliest, more festive house on the street.
Putting It All Together: Top Tips and Safety
- LED outdoor Christmas lights are your friend: They last longer, run cooler, are more energy efficient and are often a lot easier to string together safely – especially if you opt for Connectable lights.
- Plan your power sources nice and early: Measure from your outdoor socket to where your lights will reach, and be sure to use weatherproof boxes, such as DRiBOX or heavy-duty extension leads.
- Use the appropriate mounting hardware: Clips, adhesive hooks, gutter hooks mean that sharp nails wont damage your wiring.
- Practice in daylight: Things look different once lit but it’s important to have good visuals.
- Don’t overload the circuits: Check the load when combining string lights together, often Connectable lights will have a limit on how many LED bulbs you can light from one power source.
- Store carefully after the season: Untangle any cables, coil strings nearly, protect the plugs, and keep the lights in a dry place ready for next year.

How to Hang Cluster Icicle Lights
Cluster icicle lights are just like traditional icicles, but with the volume and charm of cluster lights – but they’re still installed in the same way. The dripping sparkle effect creates a mesmerising twinkle that will instantly draw the eye. But how do you hang these beauties? It’s easier than it looks –
- Measure your lights – The cluster icicle lights are connectable, so there’s no concern of running low on light as long as you measure accordingly.
- Mounting – Gutter hooks are the easiest way of hanging icicle lights. They allow the lights to stay firmly in place whilst also leaving that free dangle that we all love.
- Spacing and alignment – Secure the gutter hooks every 8-12 inches apart to keep the icicles from drooping while keeping the top cable level.
How to Install Hanging Silhouettes
Silhouettes could be anything from wall-mounted fine line silhouettes to figures such as reindeer and snowmen. These small details pack a mighty punch and are great for festive storytelling.
- Pick your silhouettes carefully – We have so many different outdoor Christmas silhouettes to choose from, so take your time flickering through the category. Ones specific for outdoor use are ideal for this installation as they feature LED bulbs which are brighter, cleaner and will last longer thanks to their higher IP rating.
- Mounting – Depending on the surface, you can use screw hooks or heavy-duty adhesive hooks to finish the look. Use plugs or screws for brick and hooks or clips for wood and soffits.
How to Install Window Lights Without Nails
We wrapped delicate mini cluster lights around each of the windows to create this impactful look, but how exactly did we do this? Not wanting to cause any long-term damage to the home, we opted for nail-free installations…
- Mounting – Strong adhesive hooks work well on the PVC around window frames. This keeps the windows safe and secure without damage and can easily be removed at the end of the season.
- Plan your layout – Place the hooks first, approximately 8-10 hooks around the edging before slipping the base wire within the clips so that they don’t sag.
- Conceal the wires – Attach the cable along the frame or slip within the window cavity to discreetly conceal it. Outdoor battery Christmas lights may even be a better option for you!
How to Fit Rope Light Around the Edging of the Home
We carefully positioning rope light around the edging of the home to help define the flower beds.
- Measurements are key – If you want to create a tight, clean outline, it’s important to measure the perimeters of your home carefully. That way, you can get rope lights cut to length, so nothing is left over.
- Mounting tracks – Mounting clips keep the rope lights in place and stops them from drifting away. These can be screwed into concrete or wood or can be stuck with adhesive strips.

How to Fit Net Lights for Bushes and Trees
Outdoor Christmas Lights aren’t just limited to those that we see on the house, they stretch further to the outer boundaries of your home. Net lights and string lights are a great way of tying your trees, shrubbery and bushes into the final project.
- Size them up – Choose net lights that are powered by LED and suitable for outdoor use. They have the appropriate mesh size to cover your shrubs nicely. If you go for net lights that are slightly larger, the light will spread evenly, and you’ll get great coverage.
- Installation – First, lay the net lights flat and untangled. Carefully drape them over the bush, starting from the top or one side.
- Secure into place – Use hooks, clips or ties to secure the net over the foliage and into the ground. This will reduce the chance of the net slipping in the wind or damp.
