Make your own gold leaf fairy lights

Well summer is almost here and thanks to the weather we’re finally starting to get excited! But also thanks to the lack of sun most of our homes are stuck in winter.
So if your home still screams cosy instead of coastal we’ve got a great summer DIY to add some instant summer vibes into your home. Sound interesting? Then keep reading for another of our quick and easy step-by-step guides on how to make these botanical leaf lights.
Below you will find a list of everything you need to make these leaf lights, it might not be the longest list but that’s why it’s so easy!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
- Fairy lights
- Leaves (real or fake)
- Glue (We chose to use a hot glue gun)
- Spray paint (any colour)
Now you have everything you need for this DIY project you can get those green fingers and thumbs out and get started!
1. First get your leaves together. Depending on whether you use real or fake leaves this task could differ quite a bit, we chose fake leaves so just had to take them off the plastic branch, but I’m sure you don’t need us to tell you how to pick leaves off a tree. To preserve real leaves you can cover them in either wax or glue.
2. Now place all your leaves out on a flat covered/protected surface, trust me you don’t want to be cleaning spray paint or hot glue off your coffee table! Then depending on how you want to spray your leaves you can either choose to cover half and spray the rest like we did or you could spray the whole thing. We still wanted some summer greenery to shine through so we covered half of the leaves with sticky tape and sprayed the rest.
3. Once you’ve left these to completely dry you can move on to the next step, now this part could get a little messy again: you need to take your leaves and your glue gun (or whatever adhesive you’ve chosen) and start gluing. I know that sounded simple but it can get quite tricky. We glued the stems to the plastic part of the LED casing so that the bulb would shine through the leaf. We let each leaf sit on the LED for a couple of seconds before we moved on to the next bulb so that the glue had time to dry and the leaf wouldn’t move around.
4. Once we had glued each leaf on to the fairy lights all we had to do was wait for them to completely dry, for as long as recommended by our chosen adhesive (which wasn’t long at all in our case).
5. And there you have it; a super simple, super easy, super effective summer DIY. We think these lights are perfect for quickly adding a touch of greenery to any room (without having to think about watering). We hope you enjoyed this project!
