Checking your Christmas Tree Lights in Advance

16th Dec @ 10:09 If you have kept your Christmas lights from last year, now is the time to see if they are still fit for purpose. Indeed, giving them a good check over now can be very beneficial as the last thing you will want a week before Christmas is to have your tree decorated only to find your lights aren’t working.

But what should you be checking for?

Plug
When checking your old lights, look at the plug first to see if it has any obvious signs of damage. If you are concerned in any way, DO NOT plug it in the mains. Instead, fetch a screwdriver and check the fuse and wiring inside.

Power pack
If your fairy lights have a power pack attached then make sure it hasn’t been damaged while in storage. To do this, listen carefully to see if it makes a loud buzzing noise when you plug it in. Although some power packs may emit a very low buzz, an unusually strong buzz may indicate that your power pack is about to give up the ghost.

Wiring
Once you are happy with the power, carefully check the actual wiring between the lights to make sure there is no deterioration, cuts or tears.

Bulbs
The last thing to do before switching your lights on is to check for broken bulbs. If all of the bulbs look OK, switch your Xmas lights on and check again that they are all working. Replace any that aren’t working.
