Why are solar lights eco-friendly?10th May @ 10:27 Solar lights are becoming more and more popular, and headlines about their ecological benefits are really starting to make people think about buying solar rather than mains-powered. But how exactly are solar lights better for the environment, and are they all they’re cracked up to be?Firstly, having a solar light will not directly benefit the environment; it is the fact that is was chosen over a mains-electricity-powered light that helps. Each time a solar-powered light is bought, a mains-powered light is not bought: that is where the environment benefits. Lights powered by the National Grid require the use of power plants to generate their electricity. Power plants use large amounts of fossil fuel to power their generators, and release lots of harmful gases and elements into the air. Fossil fuels are non-renewable, so we are using up the planet’s resources without replacing them to make electricity. Releasing harmful gases is exactly that: harmful, to the ozone layer as well as the immediate environment. The more we can use that does not require the use of a power plant, means less electricity generated by a power plant. Less generated electricity means less fuel needed to power the generator. Less fuel to power the generator means more fossil fuels staying in the Earth for longer. The moral is this: solar power reduces the burning of fossil fuels, which will help preserve the planet.
