These traditions are often ones that the family have held to over decades and are rarely challenged – until the children grow up or have partners and families of the own.

For every family that wakes early and rushes to open presents before breakfast has been eaten there is a family that will wait until after Christmas lunch to do it. Equally, for every family that toasts the onset of Christmas day with a glass of champagne there is a family that will enjoy a full English breakfast and a walk before cracking open the bubbly – if at all.

Strong feelings surround the most precious of Christmas symbols – the Christmas tree. If you or a family member suffers from hayfever or an allergy to plants then an artificial Christmas tree rules out the chances of a reaction to the pine resin found in real trees. Additionally, there is no dropping of needles with artificial Christmas trees, so there is none of the sweeping and clearing up involved either.

Environmentally, they are less wasteful, and the use of the same tree means Christmas can cost a little less.
