Some safety advice when using decorative lights

10th Mar @ 11:45 Some lights are left on for hours at a time, and can potentially cause a fire risk. Incandescent bulbs give out 80% of their energy as heat, and so always need to be given plenty of space and not put near paper, fabric or any other flammable material. LEDs, however, give off 90% of their energy as light, and so do not heat up in the same way. In fact, an LED will only become slightly warm to the touch if left on for hours and hours at a time.

Even though they do not produce heat, you should still try to make sure LED lights are out of the reach of children and pets. This is because they still use electricity, and could potentially cause harm to anyone if they break a connection, or do anything to the light whilst it is plugged in.

The most important safety advice is to always read the label. Installation instructions will be different depending on whether you have indoor lights, outdoor lights, Solar lights, fairy lights or LED figurines. Make sure you read instructions carefully before installing your lights, and always try to fit them and move them around before you plug them in.
