Origins of Popular Christmas Tree Decorations

23rd Aug @ 12:40 Almost everyone has at least one bauble and a Christmas tree topper in their home. But few people know the long and varied history behind them.

Christmas baubles have been in production since the 1800s. The first Christmas baubles were produced in Germany. They were made in Germany of glass blown around a mould. Small glass baubles would be hung on a string in a similar style to the threaded popcorn decorations that were popular in America.

Because they were only produced in Germany, Christmas baubles were only popular throughout Europe for most of the 1800s. On a visit to Germany in 1880, the American F. W. Woolworth discovered Christmas baubles and started exporting them to the USA.

Post World War II, production of Christmas baubles in Germany stopped, but some of the companies were re-established after the fall of the Berlin wall. Today, Germany is still home to the largest glass decoration company in the world, although plastic Christmas baubles are the more popular.

Christmas tree toppers have been used since Christmas trees first appeared in the 1800s. Today we tend to use nativity related items, such as stars or angels, as Christmas tree toppers, but in the past people would place a lit candle on top of their tree. This is a nod to paganism and the winter solstice.

Christmas baubles and Christmas tree toppers are some of the most enduring decorations in history. No doubt they will hold the same popularity for years to come.
