How to Make Your Own Christmas Tree Ornaments

23rd Sep @ 09:46 Making your own Christmas tree ornaments is a fun, economical, green way to decorate your tree. It can also be a great, hands-on activity to do with your children, or your students if you are a teacher.

For less mess projects, for smaller children for instance, you can make very simply Christmas tree ornaments by tying red and green ribbons or gold cord onto small toys and other objects. Drill or poke holes into objects beforehand if necessary. Let children tie the ribbon of their choice onto the toy themselves.

Another fairly easy project for small children is cardboard ornaments. You can use cookie cutters to trace shapes onto cardboard, and then allow children to glue on glitter, beads, sequins, ribbons, buttons, and other embellishments.

For older children you can get a bit more detailed. Very pretty Christmas tree decorations can be made from natural items like pine cones and seashells. Tie ribbons onto pine cones and then glue colourful beads and other items onto the petals. Drill holes into sea shells and then tie a ribbon on and paint the shell, or glue sequins or plastic jewels onto the shells.

Hand sewn Christmas tree ornaments are also fun for older children to make. Find simple patterns online, or draw simple 2-D templates. Show children how to do the blanket stitch, or the back stitch to embroider designs onto felt.

Look for more ideas online for both younger and older children. Be sure to use safety scissors for small children, and use glue sticks to avoid sticky fingers and glue getting onto clothing.
