Christmas Tree Decorations – Then and Now16th Aug @ 12:38 Today there are more Christmas decorations available than you could use in a lifetime. From the traditional Christmas baubles to more modern Christmas tree decorations trimmed with fur and feathers, there really is something to suit every taste. Although a lot of things have changed, a lot of modern decorations take influences from ones our ancestors would hang generations ago.Christmas tree ornaments date back to the 1800s. Back then, people would hang pieces of fruit, in particular apples, and nuts from their trees. These days, plastic depictions of fruit are still popular Christmas tree decorations. As the years went on, it became popular for light to reflect from the Christmas tree, so people began hanging shiny pieces of foil from their trees. Nowadays, we use lengths on tinsel to achieve the same effect. In Germany in the 1800s, families would bake cookies shaped like stars and bells to hang from their Christmas tree. A little later, Americans would string popcorn and cranberries to hang around the tree. It’s still popular today to use food as Christmas tree decorations, although we’re more likely to use foil-wrapped chocolate or candy canes. Christmas tree decorations and articial Christmas trees are becoming more and more modern as time goes on; the recent bright pink and upside down Christmas trees being prime examples. But, although it’s excellent to see new things appearing, it’s nice to know that we still retain some of the traditions and customs from yesteryear.
