Whilst time and technology has seen the traditional Christmas tree morph into either an artificial Christmas tree or a pre lit Christmas tree, and nut and berry clustered ornaments gathered from the forest have been replaced by Christmas baubles and Christmas ornaments, this annual festival has always been associated with warmth and light. Winter festivals in pre-Christian days were always held around the time of the winter solstice, in order to welcome back the spring, with its longer days and the sunlight which would bring life and nourishment back to the land. Mistletoe, Ivy Holly and evergreen fir trees became symbols of resilience and eternal life, and in the Christian period, this association lent itself perfectly to the story of Christ Himself.
